The photograph shows the Turon River at Palmers Oakey,
a great place for swimming and fishing.
Photo: Stewart Sewell

I have been coming to this lovely place for the last 18 years,
and I don’t think I will ever stop coming here.

STEWART SEWELL gets away to a beautiful spot near Bathurst.
My favourite place is Palmers Oakey, on the
Turon River between Bathurst and Capertee.
This beautiful place, 150 km northwest of Sydney, is nearly my second home. Being there is like feeling that there is no outside world. The noises you here are only the wind,
the running of the river and the beautiful sound of the wildlife.
The variety of wildlife ranges from eastern water dragons, red-bellied black snakes, eastern grey kangaroo, wombat, bearded dragons, red necked wallabies, brush tail possums, and many different types of birds.
The native flora is also abundant, with many different species of wattle, casuarina, eucalyptus, grevilla, callistemon and more.
It is quite an amazing range.
There are many activities to entertain you. Bushwalking early in the morning is a great way to get the day going, with the birds in full chirp. The native animals are out and the views are amazing. Fishing is one of my favourite activities. You can catch rainbow trout and yabbies in the river, which is also great for swimming and canoeing.
