We are seeking urgent Federal Government support for a strong NSW
Government decision to ensure that:
- large red gum national parks are created and recognised under
Federal environmental laws;
- funds are provided to restructure the River Red Gum timber industry
and invest in new green enterprises;
- redirects existing funds for water and land purchase to increase
environmental flows in the Murray and build the Red Gum reserve
system across tenures.

an urgent message direct to key Cabinet Ministers.

The independent NSW Natural Resources Commission released its final
report on River Red Gum on the 21st December 2009.
The report found that:
- A total of 106,000 hectares of NSW State Forests should be
transferred to protected areas and 35,000 hectares should remain
as State Forest.
- The new National Park areas announced by NSW Premier Nathan
Rees on December 3rd were fully vindicated.
- An extra 1,200GL of environmental flows is required for the
Murray River.
- NSW Red Gum logging is unsustainable and has been for decades.
The forests have been severely over-cut. Even without reserves,
log volumes must decrease by 70%.
The NSW Government has praised the NRC report and we are urging
them to deliver on it in full, with some improvements, through the
introduction of special legislation into Parliament in March 2010.

30th June 2009 saw the beginning of a new era for Victoria’s vulnerable River Red Gum forests with the cessation of commercial logging in a majority of forests in progress towards the creation of world class national parks.
The end to damaging logging will help protect many threatened species and ensure their survival into the future.
The new parks will protect Victoria’s natural assets and provide a major long-term boost for regional economies and jobs with the creation of 30 new park ranger positions and a number of tourism opportunities.
The Community Engagement Panel report made a key recommendation that the “Government should actively support the development of dry land, mixed
species agro-forestry in the River Red Gum region to assist in providing
local firewood,” including incentives to land holders to invest in agro- forestry.

Joint management with Indigenous Traditional Owners of new River
Red Gum National Parks is critical for the environmental, social
and cultural health of River Red Gum ecosystems and their people.
This campaign will support the Yorta Yorta efforts for a jointly
managed Barmah-Millewa national park and work closely with Aboriginal
people and groups in other areas.
