FIREWOOD
Your
Guide to Sustainable Firewood in NSW - just released!
About
our Firewood Project
National Parks Association of NSW is concerned
about the management of firewood collection from woodlands and
forests throughout the state.
Firewood collection is having extensive impacts
on the states biodiversity, as prime habitat is also prime
firewood. Many different birds, mammals, insects and reptiles
use dead fallen and standing timber. This is also the most commonly
used wood to be burnt in stoves and wood heaters.
The firewood industry is largely unregulated as
there is little control on where firewood is collected from. No
tracking method exists to enable consumers to be assured that
the wood that they are buying is sourced from ecologically sustainable
sources.
NPA has undertaken a number of initiatives to
highlight the threats posed by firewood use. This web page contains
links to different aspects of our firewood campaign.
In 2000, NPA hosted a conference in Armidale
on the impacts of firewood, particularly impacts on the NSW western
woodlands and the problems of woodsmoke which is a significant
health problem in the township of Armidale.
