CONSERVATION
General
Information
NPA is a non-profit, non-Government organisation
working to protect natural areas. With 19 branches spread across
New South Wales, its committees, woking groups and staff work together
to achieve conservation outcomes throughout New South Wales and
its coastal waters.
A system of national parks and nature reserves is
the cornerstone to achieving long-term conservation. However, we
need to ensure that this is supported by other measures, including
private land conservation. This is the future of biodiversity conservation.
Our work includes:
- Advocating
to protect areas with high biodiversity values as part of the
National Parks system
- Surveying
and researching the management of existing National Parks and
other natural areas.
- Raising alerts
when conservation is threatened
- Developing
new methods for conservation
- Educating
the community about conservation through bushwalks, workshops,
seminars, and community consultation
While NPA's
efforts led to the establishment of the National Parks and Wildlife
Service (NPWS), NPWS is the actual State Government department that
manages national parks. Go to their website
if you have a particular question about a management issue or visiting
a local park.
For answers
to commonly-asked questions about our conservation priorities, go
to our FAQs page.
More information
about our specific conservation priorities can be found on our NPA
Policies page, in our Strategic
Plan and in our document, Nature
on the Line. Our New
Reserves page also has information proposals for new protected
areas. Our election
pages outline our key issues for the 2007 State Election on
24 March.
Finally, much
of our recent conservation work, as well as latest opinions, are
recorded in our bimonthly National
Parks Journal. Also check out our media
releases for up-to-date conservation news.
Below is an
overview of our major campaigns.

|
Tourism in
National Parks
The NSW Government has adopted pro-tourism
industry recommendations that put our national parks at risk.
This page gives an overview of the threats associated with
the commercialisation of national parks and what you can do
to stop the legislation proposed for September 2009 from going
forward.

This page gives a quick overview of our Western
NSW Program, including NPA West, Red Gum Icons, and Western
Woodlands.
|
|

|
NPA-West
NPA-West is a project building support for
a whole landscape conservation effort throughout the Riverina,
using existing remnant vegetation as the starting point for
establishing an ambitious network of connected and protected
vegetation.

Red
Gum Icons
The Red Gum Icons proejct is a cross-border
campaign run by NPA NSW and the VNPA. It aims to protect iconic
forests and wetlands along the Murray River and its tribuatries,
and promote ecologically sound comanagement by NSW and Victorian
governments.

|
Western
Woodlands
This is an over-arching theme for our Western
NSW Program that seeks to save the remaining natural ecosystems
in the severely threatened and under-protected woodland belt
of western NSW.
|
|

|
Firewood
Another theme of our Western NSW Program that
addresses the serious environmental damage caused by firewood
collection from our native woodlands and forests.
|
|

|
Hunting
in National Parks
In June 2009 the NSW Government considered
supporting legislation proposed by the Shooters Party allowing
recreational hunting in national parks, hunting of native
birds and animals and the establishment of private game reserves.
In response to overwhelming public pressure, on 23 June, the
Rees Government changed their position and opposed the Bill.

raises awareness of coastal marine issues, and seeks a network

|
|
Crown
Lands
Including the Crown lease sell-off campaign
that seeks to halt the sell-off of environmentally significant
areas within crown leases.
|
|
Vehicles

Election 2007
Nature on the Line: What are the main issues
facing the natural environment and what are the parties and
candidates saying about them?
|
|
|
PRIVATE NATIVE FORESTRY
The newly gazetted Private Native Forestry Codes of
Practice are a step forward to finally regulate the logging
industry on private land in NSW, but the constraints contained
within them are totally inadequate to prevent environmental
degradation or to protect high conservation value areas.

Many of our branches
also conduct local campaigns. To be involved (or start your own
